Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Week 3: Updates

Hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in unpatched software on your personal devices to access your business identity. When new software updates come out to the public, it allows everyone, especially hackers, to learn about and exploit those weaknesses. Public knowledge of those holes leaves you and your organization as easy prey.

Here are some tips for ensuring your software is not an easy target:

  • Software updates fix general problems and provide new security patches where criminals might get in.

  • If an update becomes available on your device, update it promptly. Better yet, enable your phone or any other smart device to auto-update.

  • When downloading a software update, only get it from the company that created it. Hacked, pirated, or unlicensed software versions often contain malware and cause more problems than they solve.

If your software isn’t updated, it is an open invitation for hackers.

Software drives all the technology around us, yet we often forget to take care of it. That lack of care can lead to serious problems if an attacker were able to gain access to our devices or network. Make sure you keep everything up to date!
